Accounting Independent Contractor

What Does an Accounting Independent
Contractor Do?

An accounting independent contractor is a professional who provides accounting services on a temporary and freelance basis. As a contract accountant, your duties will vary depending on the requirements of each client you work with. You can specialize in different areas such as tax preparation, bookkeeping, or financial document preparation for businesses. If you specialize in tax preparation, your work may be seasonal. An accountant can also assist businesses or individuals with financial audits, organizing financial records, and handling payroll, accounts receivable, and accounts payable bookkeeping tasks. As an independent contractor, you have the flexibility to work for more than one client at a time.

How to Become an Accounting Independent Contractor.

The qualifications required to work as an accounting contractor may vary depending on the nature of the tasks you perform. If you offer comprehensive accounting services, you must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in accounting along with at least 5 years of relevant work experience. For bookkeeping contractors, an associate degree in an accounting-related field or experience working in a bookkeeping, payroll, or accounts receivable department can substitute for a degree. In addition, accounting contractors should possess excellent math skills and know relevant software such as QuickBooks, Dynamics, and Netsuites.
